Sunshine beats down on the Yelm High School stadium’s new turf field Wednesday afternoon.

As summer draws to a close, families all around Yelm are preparing for the upcoming school year.

Orientation dates and open houses are coming soon.

Yelm High School freshmen will attend orientation on Friday, Aug. 23, according to the Yelm Community Schools calendar. Students will arrive at 9 a.m. Pictures will be taken around noon.

Monday, Aug. 26, is picture day for the rest of the high schoolers.

Yelm Middle School and Ridgeline Middle School will hold orientations on Wednesday, Aug. 28, from 2 to 5:30 p.m.

The elementary schools will hold open houses on the same day, though times will vary.

Fort Stevens, Lackamas and Mill Pond will host open houses from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.; McKenna and Prairie will host open houses from 6 to 7 p.m.; and Southworth will host its open house from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The first day of school for first- through 12th-graders is Wednesday, Sept. 4.

The first day for kindergarteners will be Monday, Sept. 9, and the first day for pre-kindergarteners will be Monday, Sept. 16, according to the district’s calendar.

Late start Wednesdays will begin Sept. 18.
