An excavator straddles the trench where contractors were buried after a collapse. Records from the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office estimate the maximum depth of the trench to be around 12 feet deep.
The incident occurred about 15 miles up the Skookumchuck Ridge. From first reports at 10:51 a.m. on Jan. 9, it took first responders about an hour to maneuver the snow-packed logging roads.

A three-man team at the Skookumchuck Wind Farm was attempting to slip a sleeve underneath a culvert about 15-feet deep. A trench collapse killed Jonathan Stringer, a 24-year-old Chehalis man, and critically injured one other worker who was transported from the lay-down yard in Vail to Harborview.
