Editor's Best Bet: Yelm Jazz Festival, 3-9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5

Yelm’s first-ever Jazz Festival is 3-9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5 at Yelm City Park with live music all day, food vendors and a beer garden. Bring a chair or a blanket.

The Choro Group starts off the day, followed by Red and Ruby at 4 p.m., Jessica Blinn at 5:15, Anjali at 6:30 and The Hot Club of Space at 7:45. The event is free (read next week’s Nisqually Valley News for a feature on the various musicians).

“The Jazz Festival is an idea long overdue,” said Yelm Mayor JW Foster. “We are pleased to partner with local businesses to bring this kind of family entertainment to our city. Yelm is a wonderful place to visit and we’re happy to share what we have with others, while creating entertainment opportunities for our own residents at the same time. It’s going to be an enjoyable evening — a perfect way to end a summer day on the prairie.”

Jessica Blinn said she’s thrilled to have an opportunity to perform outdoors in her own community. She’s classically trained in opera, and moved to the Northwest from the San Francisco area about a dozen years ago. She’s performed with one of the dance bands at the Governor’s Ball.

“That was a treat,” she said.

Blinn will perform songs from “The Great American Songbook” such as swing and jazz standards from Gershwin and Cole Porter. Guitarist Daven Tillinghast will accompany her. Hopefully, Blinn said, “someone will dance. I always love it when people dance.”

“It’s great that La Gitana is taking a lead, supporting live music to create this event in Yelm. I’m delighted,” she said of the Yelm restaurant.
