Mount Rainier sets the backdrop of Mineral Road South.

The 13th annual Rainier Independent Film Festival, scheduled for this Friday through Sunday, has announced a lineup including more than 40 films.

The Student Movie RIFF, now in its third year, is open to students in grades nine through 12 in the Eatonville, Morton, Yelm, Mineral, Orting and Bethel school districts.

The top 10 films will be screened at 10 a.m. Saturday morning at the Lions Theater. The first place prize is a scholarship for $1,441.10.

Filmmakers Gary Lundgren, Lukas Hassel, and Shawn-Caulin Young, all have new films playing this year. Gary Lundgren brings us our closing night film, “Phoenix, Oregon” a comedy of midlife reinvention and the redeeming power of friendship. Gary will be in attendance for the Q&A.
